France vs. Spain – A Potential Blockbuster Clash in the Main Round in Cologne
Spain and France are undoubtedly two of the most successful teams in handball history. Although the statistics show a clear advantage for France, recent years have demonstrated that there is no longer a clear favourite when these two nations meet. Their most recent encounter almost symbolically ended in a draw.
Since records began more than 70 years ago, France has dominated the head-to-head record against Spain with 24 victories. Of their 40 meetings, Spain has won just 12, while four matches ended in a draw. One particularly memorable recent encounter was Spain's surprising 36:32 victory at the 2026 European Championship in Denmark. Both France and Spain were eventually eliminated in the main round.
Whether at the European Championship, World Championship or Olympic Games, matches between France and Spain have always had a special significance. While Spain secured the bronze medal at the 2021 World Championship with a 35:29 victory over France, the French defeated Spain 36:31 in the group stage of the Olympic Games that same year on their way to winning gold.
It is therefore fitting that France claimed the first of its four European Championship titles with a final victory over Spain. In 2006, the French team, led by world-class goalkeeper Thierry Omeyer, secured a convincing 31:23 win over Spain in the European Championship final.
Looking ahead to next year's World Championship, this rivalry could add another chapter to handball history. While France will face Argentina, Brazil and Kuwait in Group D, Spain will compete against Chile, Croatia and Türkiye in Group C.
If both nations successfully navigate the preliminary round, the two title contenders could meet as early as main round Group II. Alongside France and Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Croatia are also among the potential teams that could qualify for this main round group.
These main round matches will take place at the LANXESS arena in Cologne, where tickets are still available.
